Fen Phen Diet Liability

Fen Phen Diet Liability
Fen Phen is a drug that was used for weight loss. The two drugs namely dexfenfluramine (marketed under brand name Redux) and fenfluramine (marketed under brand name Pondimin) are the main problem causing drugs that were being sold in the market. These two drugs in combination with phentermine or alone had been prescribed for weight loss. The combination of drugs fenfluramine and phentermine is reffered to as Fen-Phen. This drug brought the drug manufacturer under Fen Phen Diet Liability. The combination of the other two drugs dexfenfluramine and phentermine is reffered to as Dexfen-Phen.
On the 15th of September, 1997 the Food and Drug Administration (FAO) of the US announced the manufacturers to remove these drugs from the market voluntarily.

A variety of cases had been filed against the manufacturer, American Home Products Corp. It was claimed that the use of these drugs lead to adverse health effects such as valvular heart disease and heart valve regurgitation A Nationwide Class action settlement was approved by the District Court in the US under Fen Phen Diet Liability. Individuals who have consumed Redux and/or Pondimin are eligible for the benefits, under this settlement. According to a study, nearly one out of every four former users of Fen-Phen has had leaky heart valves. But not many of the patients needed surgery nor became ill. But the leaky heart valves may cause problems in the future. And so these drugs were pulled off from the Pharmacy shelves. However, a number of doctors still support Fen-Phen and believe that it sure must deserve a second chance.
